CLEOPATRA MATHIS<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\nWhen I woke, the waves had gone black,<\/p>\n\n\n\n
turning over the macerated<\/p>\n\n\n\n
curd of the ocean bottom, heaving its sludge<\/p>\n\n\n\n
onto the beach. Some storm far out, I thought,<\/p>\n\n\n\n
had ravaged the sea, stirred up its bed,<\/p>\n\n\n\n
sent the whole mess flying to shore.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
At my feet I found a grave of starfish,<\/p>\n\n\n\n
broken and gnarled among the fleshy<\/p>\n\n\n\n
snipes and heads. Every shade of death<\/p>\n\n\n\n
covered the sand. It looked hopeless<\/p>\n\n\n\n
in the pale day but for the birds,<\/p>\n\n\n\n
a congress of gulls, terns, and the rarest plovers,<\/p>\n\n\n\n
calm for once, satiated, a measure of<\/p>\n\n\n\n
the one law: this sea will claim it all\u2014<\/p>\n\n\n\n
